Calcite Conundrum allows a player to lay down and use a second set of top and bottom run cards, leaving three instead of the usual five cards in his hand. The second set of run cards is placed adjacent to the original run cards on the side corresponding to the direction of play (i.e., left side if play is clockwise).
The second set of run cards acts as an extra turn for the player, which may first be used on the turn where Calcite Conundrum was played. If the player has a triplet, then the first set top and bottom run cards can be played followed by the second set of top and bottom run cards, in the following sequence:
- First top run card
- First bottom run card (if the player has a triplet)
- Second top run card
- Second bottom run card (if the player has a triplet)
If the player has a triplet and turns up Calcite Conundrum first, the player must lay the second set of run cards and then play the second card from the first set before then moving on to play both cards in sequence from the second set.
The player may continue using both sets of run cards while he has at least one bunny in the bunny circle. Once the player no longer has any bunnies in the bunny circle, he must discard all seven cards from his hand and both sets of run cards and draw a completely new hand of seven cards. Play then reverts to normal, with one set of top and bottom run cards down and five in hand.
- Calcite has the interesting property that its index of refraction is different depending on the axis.
